5 AI Practices Your AV Integrator Should Follow
What Responsible AI Programming Looks Like, From Our Own
AI is speeding up the way commercial AV systems are programmed, and that’s a good thing when it’s handled by someone who understands the underlying technology. It’s a very different story when it isn’t.
At a recent InfoComm session on AI-driven AV programming, our own Nick Paton, R&D Specialist here at M3 Technology Group, shared a story that stood out. An engineer with good intentions set out to build a simple internal tool. He had no background in the underlying systems. After enough back-and-forth prompting with an AI model, he’d unknowingly disabled his database’s security settings and exposed a credential that gave anyone who found the page full control of his cloud environment. Nobody meant for that to happen. That’s exactly the point.
The AI itself wasn’t the problem; the absence of a process around it was. Below we explore what separates an integrator who uses AI responsibly from one who leans on it blindly.

1. They Show You the Plan Before Anything Changes
A well-run AI workflow doesn’t jump straight to editing a live system. Before any change is made, the AI produces a plain-language, editable file laying out exactly what it intends to do, what steps it’ll take, and which parts of the system it’ll touch. A qualified engineer reviews that plan first. If something looks off, it gets caught on paper, not in your conference room during a meeting.
2. They Connect AI to Real Hardware Through Controlled Tools
Off-the-shelf AI models don’t know your Q-SYS core or your specific control processors, and their training data quickly becomes outdated. Serious integrators use standardized connections that let the AI pull real, up-to-date information from your devices and documentation, rather than guessing based on outdated knowledge. That’s the difference between a system that’s genuinely aware of your equipment and one that’s improvising.
3. They Test Every Change Before It Reaches Your System
Automated tests give an AI-assisted workflow a way to check its own work. When a change breaks something, the test catches it immediately instead of leaving it for someone to discover mid-presentation or mid-meeting. As a system grows more complex, this kind of built-in checking becomes less of a nice-to-have and more of a requirement.
4. They Can Always Roll Back a Change
Version control gives an engineer a safety net. It means an integrator can try something ambitious, confident that if the AI implements a change poorly, it can be reversed in seconds rather than troubleshot live. Without that safety net, “ambitious” quietly turns into “risky.”
5. They Understand the Code, Not Just the Prompt
There’s a real difference between someone who issues prompts until something works and someone who stays in control of the process while using AI to move faster. The engineer behind the incident we described at the beginning of this article wasn’t reckless. He simply didn’t have the technical grounding to recognize what the AI was doing under the hood. That gap is exactly what a qualified integration team exists to close.
Why AI Matters for Your Building
None of this is theoretical for a facilities or IT team evaluating a commercial AV partner. AI is already showing up in how systems get programmed, whether that’s a corporate office, a government facility, or a municipal building. The question worth asking isn’t whether your integrator uses AI, but whether they use it with the same discipline they’d apply to any other engineering process: reviewed plans, real testing, and a team that understands what’s actually happening behind the prompt.
At M3 Technology Group, that discipline is built into how our R&D and engineering teams approach every project. We stand behind the same standard Nick shared with the industry at InfoComm, and pair it with M3 VISION, our ongoing system monitoring, to keep your AV environment stable long after installation day.
